IAEA reports drone strike on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear lab

A drone has hit the External Radiation Control Laboratory (ECRL) at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The agency said it had been informed by the plant that “a drone targeted its External Radiation Control Laboratory (ECRL) today.”

It added that no injuries were reported and that it was still unclear whether the laboratory sustained damage. The facility is located outside the main perimeter of the nuclear plant.

The IAEA said its team on site has requested access to the laboratory to assess the situation.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated concerns over safety risks, saying that “any attacks near nuclear sites can pose nuclear safety risks.”
