Iceland summons US envoy over Trump’s provocative map

Iceland has summoned the US ambassador after President Donald Trump posted a map on social media showing Iceland and several other countries covered by the American flag.

The map showed the US, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean under the US flag, with the entire landmass labelled “United States of America”, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir called in US Ambassador Billy Long, who formally took up the post last month, according to Icelandic broadcaster RUV.

The Icelandic foreign ministry told RUV that the position had been clearly expressed that the post was “completely inappropriate”.

Trump posted the image on his Truth Social platform without explanation.

The US State Department, US embassies in Copenhagen and Reykjavik, and the US consulate in Nuuk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump has repeatedly said in recent years that the US should acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. His position has caused tensions with Denmark and raised concerns elsewhere in Europe.

Iceland voted last month against reopening talks on EU membership. Supporters of closer ties with the EU had cited concerns about US reliability, although analysts said domestic economic issues were ultimately the main factor behind the result.

The latest post came hours after the European Commission announced a €200 million investment in Greenland.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, speaking to Danish news agency Ritzau in Nuuk, said Greenland’s government and people had repeatedly made clear that they did not want to become American.
