ICRC president meets Hamas leader to discuss humanitarian issues in Gaza

The president of the International Red Cross traveled to Qatar to meet with the leader of Palestinian group Hamas to "advance humanitarian issues" in Gaza.

As reported by Reuters, President Mirjana Spoljaric met with the political leader of the militant group, Ismail Haniyeh, as well as Qatari authorities who are acting as mediators in the conflict.

The ICRC said that the meeting was part of discussions with all sides to the conflict to improve respect for international humanitarian law.

It noted, however, that it did not hold negotiations aimed at releasing more than 200 hostages seized by Hamas in the course of their murder spree into Israel on October 7.
