Illegal migration to EU drops 26% in 2025

Illegal crossings of the EU’s external borders declined by 26% in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the EU border agency Frontex.
Around 178,000 cases of illegal migration were recorded, marking the lowest level since 2021, Caliber.Az reports.
Frontex noted that the number of migrants arriving on Greece’s island of Crete from Libya tripled in 2025, while arrivals from Algeria increased by about 14% compared to 2024.
At the same time, flows from West African countries fell sharply by 63%, and arrivals from the Balkan Peninsula declined by 27%.
Overall, the largest numbers of illegal migrants came from Bangladesh, Egypt, and Afghanistan.
