IMO chief warns military escort cannot fully secure Strait of Hormuz
17 March 2026 10:54
The head of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, has warned that naval escorts for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz cannot fully guarantee the safety of commercial shipping.
In an interview with the Financial Times, he stated that while military assistance can reduce the risk for ships navigating the waterway, it does not eliminate it entirely.
“It reduces the risk, but the risk is still there. The merchant ships and seafarers can be affected,” Dominguez said.
He also emphasised that naval protection is not a long-term or sustainable solution for ensuring safe passage through the strait.
