In memory of Tovuz battles: Defence Ministry holds series of events PHOTO
A series of events on the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of the Tovuz battles were held in the Army Corps, formations, military units, and special educational institutions of the Azerbaijan Army.
As part of the events, held in accordance with instructions of the Azerbaijani defence minister, officials of the Defence Ministry, the regional executive powers, families of the martyred soldiers, veterans of war, servicemen, as well as the public and media representatives visited the Alleys of Martyrs. There they honoured the memory of the martyrs who died in the Tovuz battles and the battles for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports, citing the press service of the Defence Ministry.
Besides, classes on socio-political training, round tables and conferences were organised, as well as documentary and feature films were demonstrated in the military units.
The servicemen also met with family members and relatives of the martyrs and enquired about their concerns.
To recap, starting from midday on July 12, 2020, Armenian armed forces rudely violated the ceasefire to capture positions in the Tovuz direction of the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border and committed the next military provocation to increase tension, firing at Azerbaijan’s positions using large-calibre machine guns, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, mortars, and other artillery mounts.
During the battles, which lasted for several days, the attempt at the offensive was averted, and the enemy was dealt a devastating blow.
As a result of the retaliatory measures, the enemy sustained huge losses and was forced to retreat. The Azerbaijani army terminated up to 100 units of manpower, a significant number of military hardware, and strategic objects of the enemy.
The battles of Tovuz ended on July 17 with the victory of the Azerbaijani Army and there was no loss of territory. Thus, 12 military personnel of the Azerbaijan Army – Maj Gen Polad Hashimov, Col Ilgar Mirzayev, Maj Namig Ahmadov, Maj Anar Novruzov, Senior Lt Rashad Mahmudov, Ensign Ilgar Zeynalli, Ensign Yashar Babayev, Sergeant Vugar Sadigov, extended army serviceman, senior soldier Elshad Mammadov, extended army serviceman, soldier Elchin Mustafazade, extended army serviceman, soldier Nazim Ismayilov and soldier Khayyam Dashdamirov were heroically martyred.
