Indian PM agrees to halt purchases of Russian oil, says Trump

03 February 2026 09:11

US President Donald Trump stated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed during a phone call to stop buying Russian oil and significantly increase fuel imports from the United States, and possibly from Venezuela.

In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including trade and ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports.

“We spoke about many things, including Trade, and ending the War with Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil, and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela. This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!” he wrote.

Trump added that what he described as the already “amazing” relationship between the United States and India would grow even stronger in the future.

“Prime Minister Modi and I are two people that GET THINGS DONE, something that cannot be said for most,” the US president noted.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India has become one of the world’s largest buyers of discounted Russian crude oil, with Russia supplying a significant share (around one-third) of India’s total oil imports as New Delhi sought affordable energy sources.

Western sanctions on Russia have made Russian oil cheaper on world markets, boosting India’s import volumes and helping lower fuel costs domestically, though this deepened India’s economic exposure to Russian energy.

The United States and other Western powers have pressured India to reduce these purchases, arguing that continued Russian oil imports indirectly fund Moscow’s war effort and complicate broader sanctions regimes.
