Indonesia’s Semeru volcano eruption sends ash 5.7 km into sky in East Java
08 April 2026 10:45
Semeru Volcano in East Java, Indonesia, during an eruption, released ash reaching approximately 5.7 kilometres above sea level, according to observation post data.
The ash cloud rose about two kilometres above the crater, spreading northeast and east, while a flow of hot gases, ash, and rocks moved southeast, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The Centre for Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation strongly advised residents and tourists to stay at least 13 kilometres southeast and five kilometres in all other directions from the crater due to the risk of falling hot rocks.
The eruption began on the evening of April 7 and lasted more than seven minutes. The volcano was classified at Level Three on the centre’s hazard scale.
