Iran classifies countries for Strait of Hormuz access

04 April 2026 09:12

Iran has introduced a classification system governing maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz, dividing countries into categories based on their relations with Tehran, Al Jazeera reported.

According to the report, countries are grouped into three categories — “hostile,” “neutral,” and “friendly.” Under this framework, vessels from “hostile” states would be barred from passing through the strait altogether. Ships from “neutral” countries would be allowed transit but would face high fees, while those from “friendly” nations would be permitted to pass freely.

The report notes that Iran has placed most Arab states of the Persian Gulf into either the “neutral” or “hostile” categories. This means those countries could face high costs for transit through the strait or may be denied access entirely.
