Iran confirms death of IRGC military advisor in Syria following airstrike

15 August 2024 20:36

Ahmadreza Afshari, a military advisor from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was declared dead on August 15 after succumbing to injuries sustained in an airstrike in Syria.

Afshari, a member of the IRGC Aerospace Force, had been assisting in Syria as part of Iran's ongoing support to the Syrian government, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The airstrike that led to Afshari's injuries was carried out by coalition forces several days ago. Following the attack, he was transferred to Iran for medical treatment but ultimately did not survive.

Iranian military advisors, including members of the IRGC, have been present in Syria at the official invitation of the Syrian government. Their involvement has been crucial in supporting the Syrian army's efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability in a country ravaged by years of conflict. The IRGC, a key force within Iran's military, has been instrumental in Iran's regional strategy, particularly in Syria, where its advisors have played a significant role in both military operations and strategic planning.

Iran's involvement in Syria is part of a broader geopolitical struggle in the region, with Tehran seeking to bolster its influence while supporting its ally, the government of Bashar al-Assad. The presence of Iranian forces in Syria has been a point of contention for other regional powers and has led to tensions with countries like the United States and Israel, both of which oppose Iran's military footprint in the region.
