Iran executes man sentenced to death over January protest attack

Iranian authorities have executed a man convicted of running over several police officers with his car during antigovernment protests in January, the country’s judiciary announced.

“Shahram Sadeghi, sentenced to death for having carried out an operational action in support of the Zionist regime and the United States, was executed this morning,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website reported.

According to the statement, Sadeghi drove his car into several police officers in Karaj, west of Tehran, on January 8, injuring seven of them.

Iran experienced one of its largest waves of antigovernment protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in December 2025 and January 2026, amid a worsening economic crisis.

The unrest, triggered by soaring prices, began on December 28 when shopkeepers in Tehran closed their businesses and took to the streets after the rial plunged to a record low against the US dollar.
