Iran keeps US on edge amid rising tensions - media
The Biden administration has communicated to Iranian officials that it does not wish to see an escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Despite this, Washington remains concerned that Iran may retaliate against Israel for the assassination of head of Hamas’ political bureau Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The uncertainty about Iran's next move is causing significant anxiety in Washington, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The US senior administration official noted: “We know they are paying attention to our messages. We don’t know if it’s changing their minds.”
This ambiguity is keeping the White House on high alert.
The US Department of Defence is still uncertain about whether Iran will launch a more significant strike than its April attack on Israeli territory, which involved missiles and drones in response to the strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria, or if Tehran will choose not to retaliate at all for the assassination of Haniyeh.
A Pentagon spokesperson explained that part of the uncertainty stems from Iran's enhanced military capabilities, demonstrated during the recent attack on Israel. The potential for another major Iranian assault on the Jewish state is causing serious concern in Washington.
