Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, says German chancellor

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Germany continues to work closely with the United States and shares Washington’s primary objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“The Americans are and remain an important partner for Germany in the North Atlantic Alliance,” Merz wrote in a post on X, adding: “We have a common goal: Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons.”

The statement comes amid strained relations with US President Donald Trump.
