Iran signals openness to indirect talks with US, rejects direct dialogue amid tensions

24 March 2025 15:12

Iran has expressed its willingness to engage in indirect talks with the United States, but remains firm in rejecting direct negotiations due to the ongoing policy of maximum pressure and perceived threats from Washington.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, reiterated Tehran's stance, emphasizing that direct talks with the US would not be feasible under the current circumstances, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

He underscored that this position is driven by the continued threats from the US, particularly under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and the aggressive policies that have characterized the bilateral relationship in recent years.

"On this issue, our position is completely clear," Araghchi stated. "Iran, under the policy of maximum pressure, under the threats voiced, will not enter into direct talks with the US until there is a change in the opposite side's approach towards Iran and the Iranian people." He further clarified that despite the barriers to direct dialogue, Tehran remains open to exploring indirect communication channels.

"No wise individual will enter direct negotiations under circumstances where maximum pressure exists," he said, referencing past attempts to negotiate with Washington.

Araghchi acknowledged that the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program, could still serve as a "basis and model" for future diplomacy. However, he emphasized that reviving the deal in its "current form and text" is no longer possible, citing Iran's advancements in nuclear capabilities since US President Donald Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the agreement in 2018.

While Iran has reduced its compliance with the JCPOA in response to the re-imposition of US sanctions, Araghchi reiterated that Tehran's nuclear activities remain peaceful. He made it clear that indirect negotiations, rather than direct talks, are currently Iran's "tactic and strategy" with Washington.

These remarks come after President Trump confirmed on March 7 that he had sent a letter to Iran’s leadership expressing a desire to negotiate. Araghchi, however, described the letter as "more of a threat" and said Iran is still considering how to respond.
