Iran signals possible Hormuz transit limits for nations backing US sanctions

10 May 2026 11:06

Iranian authorities will not allow vessels from countries that join US sanctions against the Islamic Republic to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian military official Mohammad Akraminia.

“From now on, countries that follow the United States’ example and impose sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly face difficulties in passing through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said in an interview with the IRNA news agency.

Akraminia also stated that the military conflict with the United States and Israel has pushed Iran to “use the geopolitical potential of the Strait of Hormuz,” adding that the Islamic Republic is now exercising its sovereignty over the waterway.

He further said that any vessel seeking to pass through the strait must “coordinate its movements with Iran,” adding that these measures “can bring significant benefits to Iran.”
