Iran to equip Russia with advanced weapons to counter Ukraine naval drones in Black Sea

20 January 2025 11:03

The Government of the Russian Federation may continue importing new military equipment from Iran following the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between the countries.

The new imports may include drones, ballistic missiles, and machine guns, Caliber.Az reports, referencing a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

A Russian military blogger suggested that the Russian government may continue to import new military equipment from Iran following the signing of the Russia-Iran Strategic Partnership Agreement on January 17.

On January 18, the blogger claimed that Russia might sell Iran advanced Su-35S, Su-30SM, and Su-57 fighter jets and S-300 air defence systems in exchange for advanced Iranian stealth strike and reconnaissance drones, Fateh-110 and Zolfaghar ballistic missiles, and long-range rotary mounted 50 calibre Moharram machine guns.

The military blogger postulated that the eventual arrival of Iranian Moharram machine guns might help Russian forces counter Ukrainian naval drones in the Black Sea.

To recall, on January 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries at the Kremlin. The agreement covers a wide range of areas, including defence, counter-terrorism, energy, financial issues, transportation, industry, agriculture, culture, science, and technology.

The signed agreement states that the intelligence and security services of both countries will exchange information and expertise. Military and military-technical cooperation will continue, along with joint military exercises. Additionally, both nations have pledged to refrain from joining third-party sanctions against one another.

Furthermore, Russia and Iran have agreed to collaborate on developing an independent payment infrastructure, as well as in the areas of arms control, disarmament, and ensuring international security.
