Iran–US nuclear talks enter crucial third round in Geneva
The third round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States have got underway in Geneva, Switzerland, under the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman.
The latest talks come amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington following a recent US military buildup in West Asia. The first and second rounds were held earlier this month in Muscat and Geneva, SNN reports.
Experts have described the current round as “decisive". The discussions are expected to center on Iran’s proposals for a temporary agreement.
The Iranian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, while the US team is led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The two sides are communicating indirectly through Oman’s foreign minister, though direct negotiations have not been ruled out.
As in the previous round, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is attending the talks. He is tasked with verifying and facilitating the technical aspects of Iran’s nuclear program, including uranium enrichment levels, stockpiles, and inspection mechanisms.
