Iran, US receive draft ceasefire to reopen Strait of Hormuz, sources say

06 April 2026 11:38

Iran and the United States have been presented with a plan aimed at ending hostilities, which could take effect on April 6 and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to a source familiar with the proposals.

The framework to halt fighting was developed by Pakistan and shared with both Iran and the US overnight, the source said, describing a two-step strategy with an immediate ceasefire followed by a comprehensive agreement, Caliber.Az reports per Reuters.

"All elements need to be agreed today," the source added, noting that the initial understanding would be formalised as a memorandum of understanding and finalised electronically through Pakistan, serving as the only communication channel in the talks.

The source told Reuters that Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has been in contact "all night long" with US Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Under the plan, a ceasefire would be implemented immediately, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with a 15–20 day window to complete a broader settlement. The arrangement, tentatively named the "Islamabad Accord," would include a regional framework for the strait, with final in-person negotiations in Islamabad.

There was no immediate reaction from US or Iranian officials. Pakistan's foreign office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi declined to comment.

Iranian officials have previously told Reuters that Tehran seeks a permanent ceasefire with guarantees that the country will not face attacks from the US and Israel. They noted that Iran has received messages from mediators, including Pakistan, Türkiye, and Egypt.
