Iran, US suspend indirect negotiations
During his visit to Muscat, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has announced the suspension of negotiations with the US, mediated by Oman.
He attributed this decision to the "unique situation" in the Middle East, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
"The Muscat process has been suspended due to the specific circumstances in the region. We do not see a basis for conducting negotiations at this time. Once we manage to overcome the current crisis, we will determine whether to resume this work," Araghchi stated.
Araghchi noted that Oman has always played a vital role in the Middle East, facilitating the resolution of various conflicts and serving as a mediator between Tehran and Washington by conveying messages and creating conditions for negotiations. The recent round of indirect talks between the US and Iran in Oman was held in May.
On May 18, Axios reported, citing sources, that the main focus of the discussions was preventing escalation in the Middle East. The consultations also addressed US concerns regarding Tehran's nuclear programme.
