Kremlin calls US-Russia peace talks on Ukraine “very complicated” as sanctions loom
The Kremlin has acknowledged the ongoing complexity of discussions between Russia and the United States regarding the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, with Moscow emphasizing the need for "many additional efforts" to reach a resolution.
The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the remarks during a press briefing, as tensions remain high between the two countries, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Peskov's comments come in response to recent statements from US President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose secondary duties on Russian oil exports if progress on the peace process is not made. Trump warned that such a move could also have significant repercussions for countries purchasing Russian fuel, further escalating the stakes in the negotiations.
"We continue our contacts with the US side," Peskov stated, underscoring that while discussions are ongoing, the issues at hand are "very complicated." He emphasized that resolving the conflict in Ukraine requires extensive efforts, and achieving an agreement will not be easy due to the intricate nature of the topics being addressed.
The Kremlin's stance highlights the difficulties both sides face in aligning their interests. The US has made it clear that it expects tangible progress in the peace talks, while Russia continues to defend its position on Ukraine and its broader geopolitical concerns.
As the conflict in Ukraine remains unresolved, the future of US-Russia relations continues to be shaped by the diplomatic efforts surrounding the peace process. The outcome of these talks will likely have far-reaching implications for global energy markets, security dynamics in Eastern Europe, and the broader international order.
While the discussions continue, both Washington and Moscow are grappling with the challenges of finding common ground in a situation marked by deep political and military complexities.
