Russian, Egyptian foreign ministers call for diplomacy in Middle East

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty have stressed the need to intensify political and diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation in the Middle East.

The statement was made following their meeting on the sidelines of a gathering of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Manila, according to Russia’s Foreign Ministry.

“The foreign ministers of Russia and Egypt discussed in detail the explosive situation in the Middle East. Both sides stressed the imperative of intensifying political and diplomatic efforts to resolve differences while taking into account the legitimate interests of all states in the region,” the ministry said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry added that the sides also discussed “some current issues of multifaceted Russian-Egyptian cooperation, including the schedule of upcoming contacts.”

“The firm mutual commitment to further advancing the strategic partnership, expanding trade and economic cooperation, as well as continuing the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects was noted,” the ministry’s statement read.
