Iranian-Australians petition to revoke recognition of Islamic Republic
13 February 2026 16:24
A group of Iranian-Australian citizens has submitted a petition to Australia’s Parliament urging the government to withdraw its recognition of the Islamic Republic as the legitimate representative of the Iranian people.
The petition claims that a significant majority of Iranians reject the Islamic Republic’s authority and instead support exiled prince Reza Pahlavi as a transitional leader toward a secular democratic system. It argues that such a transition would safeguard Iran’s territorial integrity and align the country with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Iran International reports.
According to the organisers, approximately 13,000 people had signed the petition at the time of publication.
