Iranian overnight attack sets power plant in Israel's Haifa ablaze, disrupts energy grid VIDEO

16 June 2025 09:59

Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on Israeli infrastructure overnight on June 15–16, causing damage to a power plant near the port of Haifa and disrupting the central power grid.

Fires were reported at a power facility in the vicinity of Haifa’s port following the strike, part of an intensifying confrontation between Tehran and Tel Aviv, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Jerusalem Post and The Guardian.

The Israeli military responded with interceptive measures, but The Guardian reported that video footage showed two hypersonic missiles making impact after the interception attempt.

The Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) confirmed that the attack inflicted damage to the central electricity network, warning of ongoing safety hazards. “Teams are working on the ground to neutralize safety hazards, in particular the risk of electrocution due to torn electrical wires,” the IEC said in a statement.

Simultaneously, work is being carried out to repair the infrastructure and restore the electricity supply, the company added, without specifying the estimated time for full restoration.

Iran's overnight ballistic missile attacks also targeted central regions of Israel, Tel Aviv, and its suburbs, according to Ynet.

Israel's air defence forces intercepted several missiles over Tel Aviv, while air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem, heightening tensions across the country.

The emergency medical organisation Magen David Adom reported multiple casualties with several people sustaining light injuries. Fires broke out at the impact sites due to the missile strikes.

In Petah Tikva, an Iranian missile struck a residential building, causing a fire. Tragically, two women and a 70-year-old man were killed in the direct hit while inside the building. Another fatality was reported in the city, and an 80-year-old man died in Bnei Brak following a missile strike. Over 100 injured individuals were evacuated from these two locations and two other areas in Tel Aviv.

The attack marks a significant escalation in hostilities, underscoring ongoing regional instability and the continuing threat posed by Iran to Israeli security. Emergency services remain active, and the situation is developing.
