Iraq denies reports of delivering US ceasefire proposal to Iran

24 July 2026 15:30

The Iraqi government has rejected reports that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi conveyed a US ceasefire proposal to Iranian leaders during his recent visit to Tehran, dismissing the claims as "unfounded" and urging media outlets to rely on official sources.

In a statement released on July 24, the Iraqi Prime Minister's Media Office denied a report published by The New York Times on July 23, which alleged that al-Zaidi had carried a US proposal for a ceasefire to Tehran and that Iranian officials had rejected it.

"With regard to the report published by The New York Times on July 23, 2026, the Prime Minister's Media Office confirms that the claims it contains are unfounded and bear no relation to reality," the statement said.

The office also called on media organisations to exercise greater caution in their reporting, urging them to rely on official sources and avoid publishing unverified information or claims attributed to anonymous sources.

Earlier, The New York Times, citing sources, reported that Tehran had rejected a US ceasefire proposal allegedly conveyed by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi during his visit to the Iranian capital, where he was said to have presented the offer to the Iranian leadership.
