Iraq extends airspace closure for third time after airport attacks
The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority has announced the extension of the closure of Iraqi airspace to all arriving, departing, and overflying aircraft for an additional 72 hours as a precautionary measure.
According to a statement published by the authority on Facebook, the restriction will remain in effect from 12:00 noon on March 16, 2026 (09:00 UTC) until 12:00 noon on March 19.
The decision was made following an ongoing assessment of the security situation and developments in the regional environment. Officials said the measure is temporary and will be reviewed depending on further developments.
Airlines and relevant authorities will be informed of any updates regarding the status of the airspace, the statement added.
This latest extension marks the third continuation of the airspace closure, following two previous 72-hour suspensions imposed after multiple attacks targeted Baghdad International Airport and Erbil International Airport.
