Iraq gas production drops by half, raising energy supply concerns
07 April 2026 12:37
Gas production in Iraq has fallen by 50% to approximately 11,300 cubic metres per day, Al Araby cites the country’s Ministry of Electricity.
The sharp decline has affected several major power stations, as key gas fields are concentrated in the southern province of Basra and partly in the north, including the Iraqi Kurdistan region. Authorities had earlier reported disruptions to oil and gas infrastructure in Basra amid heightened regional tensions.
The Ministry of Electricity warned that the drop in gas production poses risks to the stability of the country’s energy supply and said steps are being taken to offset the shortfall.
