Iraq opens direct talks with US over exemptions for Iranian flights

Iraq is holding direct talks with the United States to secure exemptions for several of its airports from US measures affecting Iranian airlines, in an effort to restore flights for humanitarian and civilian needs.

The Iraqi government said the exemptions would allow air links to resume for people travelling for medical treatment, education and religious pilgrimages, as well as for other civilian purposes.

Baghdad has urged all parties involved in the broader crisis to pursue dialogue and negotiations, saying that diplomatic efforts should focus on finding solutions to current conflicts that serve the interests of countries and peoples across the region.

The request comes after US measures affecting Iranian airlines disrupted flights involving Iraqi airports.
