Iraq sets September 30 deadline for armed groups to disarm

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is prepared to resort to force against armed groups if they refuse to surrender their weapons by September 30, Al Arabiya reports, citing sources.

The outlet said the prime minister has already notified the leaders of political blocs of his determination to “confront the factions” obstructing the disarmament process.

Baghdad has stepped up contacts with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The sides are discussing measures to curb arms-smuggling channels and coordinate efforts against radical elements.

After September 30 — the date set for the completion of the withdrawal of international coalition forces from Iraq — any illegal possession of weapons and arms stockpiles will be classified as terrorism.
