IRENA CEO highlights joint initiatives with Azerbaijan at COP29

Francesco La Camera, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with Azerbaijan in the context of COP29.

"We are pleased to cooperate with Azerbaijan within the framework of the COP," La Camera stated in an interview with local media, per Caliber.Az.

He emphasized that the current event provides a valuable opportunity and expressed optimism that the observation report would facilitate successful negotiations in Baku.

"At COP29, we are launching a new initiative focused on Central Asia in partnership with Azerbaijani leadership. For the first time, we are organizing an investment forum during COP, which is a significant development given the short timeframe," he noted.

La Camera also highlighted ongoing efforts to integrate new systems into the energy corridor, stating, "We are working to simplify project financing. Our collaboration has been fruitful, and I am hopeful that Azerbaijan will achieve its objectives. There are specific areas where we have already seen concrete results, and we appreciate the partnership with both the COP President and Azerbaijan's Minister of Energy."

As a reminder, COP29 will take place in Azerbaijan this November, a decision made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is expected to become a central hub for global climate discussions, with an estimated attendance of 70,000 to 80,000 international participants.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to address the impact of human activities on the climate. The Conference of the Parties (COP), which comprises 198 member countries, oversees the implementation of the UNFCCC. Annual COP meetings have been held since the first conference in March 1995 in Berlin, with the secretariat based in Bonn.
