IRIB: US underwater surveillance drone “falls into IRGC hands”

The naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have seized a US military Remus 600 underwater surveillance drone in the area of the Strait of Hormuz, IRIB reports, citing an IRGC statement.

The corps said the unmanned vehicle had been used for surveillance in the Strait of Hormuz and is currently in the hands of specialists who are working to extract information from it.

“Thanks to the Almighty, the IRGC Navy [...] managed to seize one of the advanced reconnaissance devices of the army of the terrorist US regime,” the statement added.

The Remus 600 is designed for underwater reconnaissance, seabed mapping, mine detection and the collection of environmental data. The system can operate at depths of up to 600 meters and performs most of its missions autonomously.

The IRGC noted that the value of the captured device extends beyond the system itself. Data stored in its memory, recorded routes, sonar readings and navigation settings could reveal how US underwater vehicles operate in the Strait of Hormuz, the IRGC said.
