ISIL terrorists arrested in northern Iraq, defence ministry says
The Iraqi Ministry of Defence announced the capture of seven ISIL terrorists in the northern province of Kirkuk.
Under directives from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to intensify intelligence efforts and combat terrorism, the Military Intelligence Directorate carried out several successful operations that led to the arrest of the seven individuals, who were wanted by the Iraqi judiciary, the ministry said, Caliber.Az reports citing Iranian media.
"One of the IS militants was a key transporter of personnel, weapons, equipment, and logistical supplies," the statement added, noting that the suspects were subsequently handed over to the relevant authorities.
While the security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of ISIL in 2017, remnants of the group have continued to infiltrate urban centers, deserts, and rugged terrains, conducting frequent guerrilla-style attacks against security forces and civilians.
