Islamic Jihad: Israel failed to meet first-phase commitments in Gaza talks

31 July 2026 10:15

The Palestinian armed group Islamic Jihad has accused Israel of failing to fulfil its obligations under the first phase of a proposed Gaza agreement, while expressing support for a deal that it says protects Palestinian interests.

Ali Abu Shahin, a member of the group's Political Bureau, said Islamic Jihad was seeking an agreement that would serve the Palestinian people and preserve what he described as the "gains of the resistance".

He argued that Israel had not implemented the commitments outlined in the first stage of the proposed settlement, despite seeking to move the process forward to a second phase. According to Abu Shahin, any further steps taken by the Palestinian side should be matched by reciprocal concessions and concrete actions by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Shahin also criticised the published draft agreement, saying it lacked clear legal mechanisms to ensure Israel fully complies with its obligations. He further claimed that provisions concerning the disarmament of Palestinian armed groups remain vague and insufficiently defined.
