Shiite militias in Iraq have increased their activity after the situation in the region was aggravated in October 2023 by the infiltration of militants of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, accompanied by killings of residents of border settlements and hostage-taking. The radicals called the attack a response to the Israeli authorities' actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel announced a complete blockade of Gaza and began strikes against it and parts of Lebanon and Syria before launching a ground operation in the enclave. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
