Israel reveals number of fallen soldiers since start of war
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released updated casualty figures detailing the human toll of the war that began on October 7, 2023. According to data provided by the IDF’s Human Resources Division, a total of 914 soldiers have fallen since the start of hostilities. Of these, 467 were killed during the ground operation in Gaza.
Since the outbreak of the war, 6,333 IDF personnel have been wounded. This includes 3,830 categorised with light injuries, 1,557 with moderate injuries, and 946 who suffered severe wounds. The IDF notes that these figures are based on the most severe level of injury sustained per individual and do not include those treated in emergency rooms but not admitted to hospitals or assigned a severity level, Caliber.Az reports.
The Gaza offensive alone has resulted in 2,968 wounded soldiers, including 1,530 with light injuries, 874 with moderate injuries, and 564 seriously wounded. As of the update, 151 wounded remain hospitalised—one in light condition, 134 in moderate condition, and 16 in serious condition.
In addition to combat casualties, the IDF has reported significant losses from operational accidents. A total of 84 soldiers have died in such incidents, the majority of them—79—in the Southern Command. These include fatalities caused by firearms, munitions, fire, and chemical accidents, as well as cases of friendly fire and other mishaps such as workplace accidents and falls. The Northern Command has reported five fatalities under similar circumstances.
Operational accidents have also led to 2,239 injuries across both commands. The Southern Command accounted for 1,764 of these injuries, while the Northern Command reported 475. These incidents range from road accidents and training mishaps to incidents involving live ammunition and fire.
