Israel suspends Jordan-Gaza convoys following checkpoint attack
On September 19, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces, visited the site of the terrorist attack that occurred on 18 September at the Allenby checkpoint.
According to Israeli media, Zamir has ordered the suspension of all convoys travelling from Jordan to Gaza until the investigation is complete and any necessary lessons are implemented.
“Yesterday, two of our soldiers were killed here. This is a serious and grave incident. We are investigating it thoroughly and will learn the necessary lessons,” Zamir said.
He noted that in recent months, a special unit for the eastern border has been established and that all defence components along the border are being strengthened.
At the same time, Zamir emphasised the importance of ongoing cooperation with Jordan, stating: “Even after yesterday's serious incident, we must remember that strategic cooperation with Jordan in the field of security contributes greatly to the activities of the Israel Defence Forces and must be maintained.”
