Israeli Air Force strikes 40 military targets in Gaza

17 August 2024 17:41

The Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes on 40 military targets belonging to radical groups in the Gaza Strip.

These targets included "military facilities" and "weapons storage sites", Caliber.Az reports via the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

The strikes were a response to rocket fire launched from Gaza into Israeli territory. The targeted facility was identified as the source of the rockets.

Meanwhile, an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon's Nabatiyeh region has resulted in the deaths of at least ten individuals, Lebanon's Ministry of Health said.

The fatalities, all Syrian nationals including a woman and her two children, mark one of the deadliest incidents in southern Lebanon since the onset of Israel's conflict with Gaza on October 7.

The strike, which targeted a Hezbollah weapons storage facility, also injured at least five people—two of whom are in critical condition. The Israeli military's action prompted a retaliatory rocket barrage from Hezbollah, aimed at Ayelet Hashahar in northern Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that sirens were triggered by approximately 55 rockets from Lebanon, but reported no injuries from the attack. However, one Israeli soldier was severely injured by a separate projectile incident in Misgav Am.

In a related development, a drone attack in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre killed a person on a motorcycle. The ongoing exchange of fire between Israeli and Hezbollah forces has intensified since Israel's Gaza offensive, which has resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian casualties.

In Gaza, an Israeli strike killed 15 members of the same family in al-Zawayda, including nine children. The IDF stated that the strike targeted militants, including one involved in launching rockets at Israeli troops. New evacuation orders in central Gaza have further strained access to essential services for the local population.

International mediators continue to work on proposals for a ceasefire as hostage and truce talks are set to resume next week.
