ISW: Russia deploys FAB-3000 M-54 bomb in Ukraine strikes PHOTO/VIDEO
Russian forces deployed the new FAB-3000 M-54 bomb equipped with a Unified Planning and Correction Module (UMPC) for the first time in strikes against Ukrainian positions in Kharkiv Oblast, Caliber.Az echoes a report from the US-based think tank "Institute for the Study of War" (ISW).
This marks a significant advancement in Russian capabilities, potentially escalating destruction if these weapons remain unimpeded. The strike, documented on June 20, targeted a reported Ukrainian deployment point in Lyptsi, Kharkiv Oblast, with footage widely disseminated by Russian sources highlighting substantial destruction despite the bomb landing off-target by 10 meters.

ISW analysts say former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had announced the commencement of serial production of FAB-3000 M-54s, large dumb-bomb variants weighing over 3,000 kilograms. These can be converted into guided glide bombs with UMPC modifications, a development showcased during Shoigu's visit to Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in March 2024. Russian sources, while praising the production, noted challenges for most tactical aircraft due to the bomb's weight and dimensions.
ISW claims that the successful deployment of FAB-3000s represents a notable milestone, enhancing the destructive potential of Russian glide bomb attacks against Ukrainian forces and infrastructure. Already increased in use, particularly in Kharkiv Oblast, these bombs pose a threat even with accuracy concerns, compensated by their extensive destruction radius.
Should Russian forces scale up the deployment of FAB-3000s or heavier guided bombs, they could inflict broader damage on Ukrainian frontline positions and critical infrastructure, mirroring the impact seen with 500-kilogram glide bombs used by the Russian Air Forces.
