In a statement on July 2, Italian customs police and the customs agency indicated that six containers of equipment were confiscated on June 18 by officials at the Gioia Tauro port in the south of Italy after being unloaded from the cargo ship MSC Arina, which had arrived from China.
Upon inspection, the cargo revealed two Chinese-made Wing Loong II military drones, which had been falsely labeled as wind turbine parts, intended to be loaded onto a vessel bound for Benghazi in Libya and delivered to General Khalifa Haftar.
The statement explained that the seizure was made in light of the international arms embargo imposed on Libya amid the ongoing civil war.
