Italian Embassy in Baku opens book of condolences following death of Pope Francis

24 April 2025 11:43

The Italian Embassy in Azerbaijan has opened a book of condolences to honour the late Pope Francis, following his passing at the age of 88.

The embassy made the announcement through its official page on the social platform X, per Caliber.Az.

“In light of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Embassy has opened a book of condolences for Italian citizens and all those wishing to pay their respects: on April 24 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and on April 25 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, as well as from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM,” the embassy said in its statement.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and one of the most influential religious leaders of the 21st century, passed away on April 21. His death marks the end of a historic papacy, one that lasted for 12 years and was marked by sweeping reforms, internal tensions, and a broad global outreach.

The announcement of his death came just one day after he made a brief public appearance in St. Peter’s Square for Easter Sunday. This was his first public outing since his release from the hospital on March 23, following a 38-day stay to treat double pneumonia.
