Italian PM's remarks on French activist’s death draw sharp response from Macron
19 February 2026 17:56
French President Emmanuel Macron urged Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to refrain from “commenting on what is happening in other people’s countries,” following her remarks on the fatal beating of a far-right activist in France.
“Let everyone stay in their own lane,” Macron said in New Delhi on the sidelines of an official visit to India, Naharnet reports.
The exchange came after Meloni reacted to the killing of Quentin Deranque, describing it as “a wound for all of Europe.”
Quentin Deranque, 23, suffered a fatal brain injury when he was beaten and kicked during a protest last week on the sidelines of a conference held by Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament for hard-left party France Unbowed (LFI).
