Italy’s PM rejects reports of plans to call early parliamentary elections

17 September 2026 08:34

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has ruled out calling early parliamentary elections, saying she intends to remain in office “as long as the support of a strong coalition remains.”

Speaking at a press conference following a Cabinet meeting, Meloni stressed that media reports suggesting she wanted to call elections were untrue. She noted that her government had set a record for the length of time in office and said she intended to remain in power until the end of the current parliamentary term, Caliber.Az reports.

The prime minister also urged that government measures aimed at addressing current problems, such as high fuel prices, not be viewed as pre-election steps. Among other measures, the government has decided to abolish, starting in 2027, a tax on small-engine cars and motorcycles ranging from €100 to €250.

Italy’s next parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in autumn 2027, although reports about the possibility of holding them as early as this autumn have been appearing increasingly frequently in the media.
