Italy seizes about 3 tons of cocaine destined for Armenia PHOTO/VIDEO
Under the coordination and guidance of [Italy's] Reggio Calabria Prosecutor's Office, the Financial Guard of the Reggio Calabria Provincial Command and officials of the Gioia Tauro Customs completed a complex operation aimed at combating international drug trafficking, seizing 2,734 kg of pure cocaine.
Investigators identified two containers among thousands of containers en route from Guayaquil (Ecuador) to Armenia, where they were expected to arrive via the Georgian port of Batumi, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Guardia di Finanza [Military Police Force reporting directly to Italy's Economy and Finance Ministry, with general economic and financial crime-fighting competencies].
The cocaine was discovered after a lengthy and complex search using sophisticated scanners and the Guardia di Finanza dog units.
The cocaine shipment was exceptionally clean and in perfect condition, which could bring the traffickers an income of more than 800 million euros.
