Japan completes discharging first batch of treated water from Fukushima NPP
Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), the operator of the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in Japan, has completed the discharge of the first batch of treated water from the nuclear power plant into the ocean.
The volume of the first batch was about 7,800 tonnes, Kyodo agency reports.
By the end of September, TEPCO specialists are expected to start draining the second batch of the same volume. Before that, they will inspect the equipment located at the plant.
A total of more than 1.25 million tonnes of water has accumulated in the NPP's reservoirs, which were used to cool the plant's reactor damaged in the March 2011 tsunami. As the reservoirs are nearing their capacity limit, they are scheduled to be emptied periodically. The practice is expected to continue for another 30 years.
