Japan strengthens defence with planned deployment of Type-12 missiles on Kyushu Island

17 March 2025 20:24

Japan is considering the deployment of long-range missiles on its southwestern island of Kyushu as part of its efforts to enhance its "counterstrike capabilities" in response to potential threats, government sources revealed on March 16.

The deployment, which is expected to begin at the end of the next fiscal year in March 2026, is aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s southwestern Nansei island chain, Caliber.Az reports, citing Japanese media.

This region is strategically vital due to its proximity to Taiwan, amidst growing concerns over China's potential invasion of the self-ruled democratic island.

China views Taiwan as a renegade province that must eventually reunite with the mainland, by force if necessary. In light of rising tensions, Japan is bolstering its defence measures to protect its own territory and regional stability.

Government sources stated that various sites are being evaluated for missile deployment, though local residents have expressed concerns about becoming potential targets in the event of enemy retaliation.

Possible deployment locations include the Ground Self-Defense Force's surface-to-ship missile regiment garrisons in Yufu, Oita Prefecture, and Kumamoto City. However, Okinawa, which lies closer to mainland China, is unlikely to be a candidate due to concerns over escalating tensions with Beijing.

The missiles under consideration for deployment are an upgraded version of Japan's Type-12 land-to-ship guided missile, with an extended range of 1,000 kilometres. This would allow Japan to target regions within North Korea and China's coastal areas. Beyond the increased range, the upgraded missile features modifications to reduce its radar cross-section (RCS), improving its stealth capabilities and making it less detectable by enemy radar systems. These enhancements make the missile significantly more difficult to intercept, particularly in contested environments where radar detection and anti-missile defences are prevalent. The missile also boasts improved guidance systems, ensuring precise targeting of enemy vessels, both at sea and near shore.

Kyushu, located in southwestern Japan, is within range of both China and North Korea, making it a crucial element in Japan's defence strategy. The island’s proximity to the Nansei Islands is particularly important, as these islands act as a key buffer zone against potential military threats from China and other regional adversaries.

Japan's growing security concerns stem from China’s increasing military assertiveness in the East China Sea, frequent incursions into Japanese airspace and waters, and its ambitions regarding Taiwan. In addition, North Korea’s continued missile tests and nuclear weapons expansion remain persistent threats to Japan’s national security.
