Japan to build advanced antimissile warship

Japan will begin constructing one of the world’s largest and most powerful surface warships before the end of the year, the Telegraph reported.

The ship: The vessel will displace 12,000 tons, with a beam of more than 80 feet, a length of 620 feet and likely more than 100 launch cells. Currently unnamed, it is being referred to as an Aegis System Equipped Vessel.

The American-made Aegis fire-control system is the world’s most advanced targeting technology. It connects advanced radar and data links to guide missiles with unmatched precision, intercepting aircraft, missiles and drones and striking targets including satellites in orbit.

The warship’s launch cells will likely accommodate a variety of munitions, including the SM-6 missile and perhaps Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, which can penetrate heavily defended airspace from 1,000 miles away.

The SM-6 is the only weapon that can be used for antiair, anti-surface, ballistic missile defense and sea-based terminal missions.

It is one of the few systems that can defend against hypersonic missiles.

The plan: The ship, which will likely be completed in 2027–28, will reportedly patrol the Sea of Japan to defend against incoming missiles. But it could also be used offensively if authorized. It could outperform any Chinese vessel and become the most powerful ship in the Indo-Pacific region, second in the world to America’s 122-cell Ticonderoga-class cruisers.
