Jordan’s King warns pushing Gaza refugees to Egypt or Jordan is "red line"

17 October 2023 13:40

Jordan's King Abdullah on October 17 warned against trying to push Palestinian refugees into Egypt or Jordan, adding that the humanitarian situation must to be dealt with inside Gaza and the West Bank.

"That is a red line, because I think that is the plan by certain of the usual suspects to try and create de facto issues on the ground. No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt," King Abdullah said at a news conference following a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Reuters reports.

In turn, Scholz said that Hamas cannot speak on behalf of all Palestinians; the civilian population of Gaza is suffering from the actions of the radical group.

“For all the horror of Hamas violence, it is important to distinguish: Palestinians are not Hamas. Hamas has no right to speak on their behalf,” Scholz said.

Scholz is set to visit Israel on October 17, becoming the first head of state to visit the nation since the October 7 Hamas terror attacks claimed more than 1,400 Israeli civilians and troops.

He said it was important to "express my solidarity with Israel very practically with my visit," as the visit will be the strongest message yet about the German government's commitment to stand with Israel.

The German leader told reporters the agenda included discussions on "concrete practical issues" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's war cabinet. Other topics include the organization of humanitarian aid to Gaza and steps to minimize the conflict from spilling into other arenas, like along the Israel-Lebanon border.
