JP: US considers comprehensive hostage release, Gaza conflict resolution

28 July 2025 15:41

Following stalled negotiations over a limited hostage exchange and a temporary ceasefire, US and Israeli officials are now reportedly exploring a broader agreement that would secure the release of all hostages held by Hamas and bring an end to the Gaza conflict.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, several members of the Trump administration believe the moment may be right to propose a comprehensive deal, despite the acknowledged difficulty in achieving mutual agreement on such terms, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Jerusalem Post.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities are said to be preparing an ultimatum for Hamas to accept the deal or face consequences.

Behind the scenes, efforts continue involving Israel, mediators Egypt and Qatar, and Hamas. US envoy Steve Witkoff has engaged in multiple meetings with Qatari officials in Sardinia to advance talks. Although the main negotiating team has returned to Israel, communication with mediators remains ongoing.

President Trump, speaking from Scotland, emphasised the urgent need to bring hostages home, highlighting that 20 remain alive along with others’ remains. He expressed uncertainty over Israel’s next steps but indicated a firm personal stance.

Meanwhile, pressure mounts from US lawmakers urging Israel to allow increased humanitarian aid into Gaza amid reports of severe distress. Israeli officials have confirmed limited aid corridors remain open but suggested these measures respond primarily to international criticism rather than a shift in policy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s approach, stating that minimal humanitarian supplies continue to enter Gaza through secure corridors, countering UN claims of blockade. He reiterated Israel’s dual objectives of dismantling Hamas and securing hostage releases.

The situation remains fluid as international diplomacy intensifies to prevent further escalation and alleviate humanitarian suffering.
