Ka Ubuntu leader calls for justice, unity in Réunion's struggle for independence

21 January 2025 17:35

Romain Catambara, the Pan-African politician and leader of the Ka Ubuntu movement, discussed the path to independence for the island of Réunion, calling for unity among nations.

Catambara, who advocates for Réunion's independence from France, criticized France's human rights stance, highlighting its lack of respect for the people of Réunion, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

"France talks about human rights, yet it shows no respect for the people of Réunion," he stated at an international conference held by the Baku Initiative Group on the theme "Independence of Réunion: A Look at France's Colonial Legacy and the Path to Sovereignty,"

A significant part of his speech focused on the need for compensation for the descendants of those who suffered under slavery in Réunion. "First and foremost, we want the return of our lands. Recognizing our history is crucial. To achieve sovereignty, nations must unite. Only then can we raise the issue of compensation for the descendants of those affected by slavery," he added.

Benjamin Clément, the coordinator of the Ka Ubuntu movement’s Réunion branch, also spoke at the conference, emphasizing the ongoing struggle for historical justice. "The patriarchal and colonial spirits are identical," Clement remarked in response to journalists' questions.

He noted that, during the period of slavery, compensation was only provided to men, as they were seen as property owners. However, Clément stressed the importance of recognizing the suffering of women who were victims of these crimes, a reality largely unknown to the public.

"We seek the truth to be made known. The compensation we expect is the restoration of historical justice and our dignity," he said.

The call for sovereignty and justice continues to resonate, with Ka Ubuntu's leaders urging for unity and the acknowledgment of past wrongs.
