Kallas: EU to unveil defence roadmap to counter Russian drones
The European Union is set to unveil a comprehensive defence roadmap this week, which will prioritise the development of systems to counter Russian drones, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Kallas warned that the EU is currently facing an “extraordinary surge” in hybrid attacks. She stressed that each violation of EU airspace by Russian drones or aircraft carries a risk of escalation, whether intentional or not.
“Russia is gambling with war, and we are moving beyond the realms of hypothetical conflict. To keep war at bay, we must translate the economic power of Europe into military deterrence,” Kallas said.
The roadmap will outline the EU’s strategy to strengthen defence capabilities in critical areas, with a particular focus on counter-drone systems. Officials say the initiative aims to ensure Europe is better prepared to respond to growing threats from hybrid warfare and maintain regional security.
