Kamala Harris gains momentum, leading Trump in latest poll

09 August 2024 10:17

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, has taken a 5-point lead over former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

The latest poll, conducted by Ipsos, highlights a significant shift in voter sentiment as the 2024 presidential race intensifies, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The survey reveals that 42% of respondents are now ready to cast their votes for Harris, reflecting growing support for her candidacy. In contrast, Trump, who is seeking a return to the White House, has secured 37% of the potential vote. Notably, 4% of those surveyed intend to vote for independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr., suggesting that a small but significant portion of the electorate is exploring alternatives outside the traditional two-party system.

Harris's recent surge in support represents a substantial increase from a similar poll conducted in July, where she had the backing of 37% of voters. During that period, Trump held 34% of the vote, making the current 5-point gap between the two candidates particularly noteworthy. This shift may indicate that voters are increasingly gravitating toward Harris as the campaign progresses, potentially due to her policy proposals, public appearances, or changing perceptions of Trump.

The poll, conducted between August 2 and August 7, surveyed over 2,000 American voters, providing a broad snapshot of the current political landscape. The margin of error for the survey is 3 percentage points, which means that while Harris’s lead is statistically significant, the race remains competitive as both candidates continue to campaign vigorously.

This polling data offers valuable insights into the dynamics of the upcoming election, underscoring Harris’s growing appeal among voters as she seeks to become the first female president of the United States. It also reflects the challenges Trump faces in his bid to regain the presidency, as he contends with not only Harris but also potential third-party candidates like Kennedy, who could influence the final outcome in a closely contested race.
